How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and check here RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the website instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12.
